This iconic Egg Chair was designed in 1958 by star architect Arne Jacobsen for Danish manufacturer Fritz Hansen, as part of the overall design for the legendary SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Jacobsen not only designed the building, but also the entire interior from door handles to furniture, with this sculptural armchair for the lobby and reception areas as the highlight.
The Egg Chair is rightly regarded as a true design icon and a work of art in its own right. The organic, flowing shapes offer a sense of security and comfort, and were revolutionary in the 1950s. The seat shell consists of a sturdy foam structure, upholstered by hand – a craft that is still practiced by Fritz Hansen today.
This particular example is completely original, upholstered in black suede that has naturally weathered over the years to a deep dark green hue. This beautiful patina gives the chair a unique character and a soul that is rarely found in modern reissues. The subtle color change, combined with the soft texture of the suede, makes this chair an exceptional showpiece for any interior.
The Egg Chair is in excellent vintage condition. And dates from 2001
