This refined lounge design for Belgian high-end furniture maker Durlet is one of Maarten Van Severen's last creations, designed shortly before his death . It reflects his uncompromising vision of form and function.
The clear, geometric lines are reminiscent of the modernism of Gerrit Rietveld and the abstract aesthetics of Piet Mondrian. Yet the chair transcends its rigid design language thanks to its surprising comfort and well-thought-out functionality.
What makes this seat special is the subtle play between sleekness and nonchalance. Van Severen deliberately used inverted seams on each leather element to give a casual touch to the otherwise minimalist design.
The chair features a synchronous, infinitely adjustable relaxation mechanism and an equally infinitely adjustable headrest, allowing it to effortlessly adapt to any sitting position. The base is made of sand-cast aluminum – a detail that underlines the attention to material and finish.
A masterpiece of Belgian design: functional, aesthetic and timeless. Pure craftsmanship.
