The Elda chair , designed by Joe Colombo in the 1960s for Comfort , is one of those designs that immediately draws a space towards it. Futuristic, powerful, and at the same time surprisingly inviting. The chair was designed in 1963 and is considered one of the great icons of Italian Space Age design.
The exterior is formed by a black polyester shell that gives the whole a strong, protective shape. Inside, a warm cocoon of brown leather opens up, constructed from seven soft cushions that together create a deep, enveloping seat. The contrast between the dark exterior and the rich leather on the inside gives the chair its distinctive character. Similar documented Elda chairs are also described as early large lounge chairs in molded fiberglass or polyester with a cocoon-like shell and loose leather cushions.
This piece is in very beautiful vintage condition . The shell is strong and well-preserved, while the leather has developed a beautiful patina over the years. Subtle shading and a natural sheen give the chair depth and life, something only time can create.
The generous proportions and the swiveling base make the seating experience complete. Once you take a seat, you feel how the design molds itself around you. Comfort is not added here; it is the starting point. It is not without reason that the Art Institute of Chicago describes the Elda as a chair with a cocoon-like seat and a swiveling base that creates an almost throne-like presence.
The Elda was designed as a progressive whole, inspired by new techniques and materials of its time. It is considered one of the first large armchairs in molded fiberglass or polyester, and precisely for that reason, it felt revolutionary at the time. Today, it still looks just as bold.
The designer also lends this piece extra weight. Joe Colombo is one of the absolute masters of post-war Italian design. He was renowned for his futuristic vision, his interest in ergonomics, and his ability to design furniture as functional sculptures for the living of the future. His work is exhibited internationally and remains a fixed reference for collectors and design enthusiasts.
One of our personal favorites.
A rare, iconic, and exceptionally seductive piece that brings together comfort, form, and history at the highest level.
